I once was blind

Mission Society missionary Michael Seward is an ophthalmologist in Papua New Guinea and works with CBM, a Christian development organization serving people with disabilities in poor countries. A CBM director, John Jeffries, contributed the following story. Read this story of Kome, and his healing.

Kome is a 70 year old farmer who lives five kilometers from Goroka in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

In 2009, he noticed his sight was rapidly deteriorating, and in a short time he was unable to see. He had to give up his life as a farmer and remain at home in his hut.

He felt guilty because he was unable to contribute to the life of his family and village. He prayed that somehow God would restore his sight.

One day, he heard an amazing story about a neighbor from a nearby village who was blind, but had had his sight restored at a hospital in Goroka. He asked his granddaughter, Beverley, to take him to Goroka – not knowing what could possibly happen.

At the Goroka Hospital the Christian Blind Mission team examined his eyes and told Kome that his problem was a cataract. With a simple operation they could fix his eyes. Kome could hardly believe what he was hearing.

On June 6, 2011 Michael Seward, a CBM doctor and Mission Society missionary, operated on Kome. The next day his bandage was removed and he was suddenly able to see again.

“I am going back to my village and I am going to be a church elder!” exclaimed Kome as he thanked the CBM team.
