The Mission Society first sent missionaries to Zambia in 2007. They worked in a variety of ministries according to their gifts, including ophthalmology, education, coordinating the delivery of personal energy transportation vehicles (PET) to disabled Zambians, and helping a village gain access to clean drinking water for the first time.
A Mission Society missionary now serves as the lead teacher in a school for AIDS orphans in Lusaka. He previously spent more than 20 years teaching in Memphis, Tennessee city schools. With a low literacy rate and 64% of the population living below the poverty line, education can make a tremendous difference for these children. Although Zambia’s economy has grown over the past several years, a high birth rate and the effects of AIDS has left the country with continually high poverty rates.
