SUMMER LEARNIN - WEEK 6

In this week's ReadIN video, professional performers Allyson Tucker, Charles E. Wallace, and Gabrielle Lee are sharing some of the acting tips they've learned over the course of their exciting careers. You will learn about how to infuse emotions into your lines, how to make your characters feel believable, and more ways to add variety to a performance.

We recommend getting the whole family together for this one, so you can all try making your favorite characters come to life! CLICK HERE or on the image above to begin.

Come with us on a journey to the incredible Great Wall of China! The Great Wall is an ancient structure with an over 2,000 year history, and runs for 3,000 miles across northern China. It is a favorite destination for travelers of all ages.

You can visit the Great Wall today - and read more about its stories and history - through this virtual tour

"Can you imagine how your life would change if batteries did not exist? If it were not for this handy storage of electrical energy, the radio in a car would not function, nor would the lights...and do not forget all portable electronic devices like phones, digital music players, or tablets, which are all powered by batteries."

Learn how to Generate Electricity with a Lemon by building your own battery using guidance from Science Buddies. All you will need are a few household items - like plastic paperclips, foil, and scissors - and a lemon!

Here at the Mission Society, we believe reading is a powerful way for students to learn and stay engaged. Because of this, we always encourage young people to develop important literacy and reading comprehension skills outside of the classroom.

If you're looking for new ways to improve reading comprehension, take a look at these tips from Scholastic

1. Read aloud. This forces children to read slower, which gives them more time to process what they read and in turn improves reading comprehension.

2. Provide books at the right level. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren't too hard. They should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for kids to focus on the overall meaning of the story. For book suggestions organized by age group, you can visit the Mission website and take a look at the Mission Summer Reading List.

3. Reread to build fluency. To gain meaning from text and encourage reading comprehension, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly — a skill known as fluency. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so they'll become more fluent in their reading comprehension.
