Activity Specialist – Wellness

Position Summary

New York City Mission Society’s Power Academy after-school program is dedicated to cultivating the personal growth and educational advancement of all of our middle school school-aged participants.  With a curriculum focused on academic enrichment, community service, cultural enrichment, the arts, recreation, and social emotional learning, Power Academy reinforces school-day learning in a safe and healthy environment. (Remote)

Title: Activity Specialist – Wellness

Program: Multiple Sites

Employment Status: Part-time: 5 hours per week

Basic Function:  The Health & Wellness Specialist is responsible for delivering programming one day per week remote in four of our programs. The Mission Society of NYC after school program fosters and develops youth’s overall wellness. Through unique and intentional programs, youth have opportunities to grow, define personal goals, embark on their own journeys, and advance in all areas of their lives.

Principal Responsibilities

Program Planning/Curriculum

  • Understands the essential objectives of the Mission Society program and can effectively communicate those objectives to all immediate stakeholders (families & youth).

  • Program components included providing an environment that fosters wellness for the children; ability to accept supervision and direction.

  • Design and implement participants’ wellness programs.

  • Conduct health risk assessments and biometric screenings.

  • Educate employees on wellness topics such as nutrition, exercise, and stress management.

  • Track participation in wellness programs and measure outcomes.

  • Prepare reports for senior leadership on the status of the wellness program.

  • Participates in all staff meetings, trainings and activities.

  • Prepare curriculum, materials, and hand-outs.

  • Use a variety of methods lifestyles (including differentiation) to match curricular objectives and the range of participants needs.

  • Conduct other duties assigned.

 

Activity Facilitation

  • Incorporate group leaders and youth workers into the activity and work with them to oversee the activity.

  • Ensure equal opportunity for all participants; utilize positive management of behavior in an environment of mutual respect which allows participants to feel safe, secure, and promotes their self-esteem

  • Develop, complete and submit weekly lesson plans

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health, wellness, or a related field.

  • At least 2 years of experience in health promotion, wellness, or a related field.

  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to develop and implement health and wellness programs.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Creative and innovative thinking.

  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Staff is expected to be committed to the mission, vision, and values of Mission Society.

Salary and Benefits

$30.00 per hour
