Position Summary

New York City Mission Society’s Power Academy after-school program is dedicated to cultivating the personal growth and educational advancement of all of our middle school school-aged participants.  With a curriculum focused on academic enrichment, community service, cultural enrichment, the arts, recreation, and social emotional learning, Power Academy reinforces school-day learning in a safe and healthy environment. (Program will operate Fully In-Person)

Title: Activity Specialist – Basketball Coach

Program: PS33 BX, PS85 BX, PS175 MA & PS192 MA

Employment Status: Part-time: 10 hours per week (Generally between the hours of 2 pm and 6 pm)

Basic Function:  We are seeking a Basketball Coach to train and lead our team of student-athletes. In this role, you will be working with athletes of varying skill levels, so your priority is to instill the fundamentals of the game. During the season, you will run daily practices, develop in-game strategies, and actively lead the team during games. This position requires daily travel, so you must have the flexibility to attend away games.

Principal Responsibilities

Program Planning/Curriculum

  • Host tryouts for student-athletes.

  • Lead daily practices to teach players skills and strategy.

  • Develop in-game strategies and rosters.

  • Attend both home and away games.

  • Actively coach and direct players during games

  • Perform administrative duties for the team.

  • Conduct other duties assigned.

 

Activity Facilitation

  • Incorporate group leaders into the activity and work with them to oversee the activity.

  • Ensure equal opportunity for all participants; utilize positive management of behavior in an environment of mutual respect which allows participants to feel safe, and secure, and promotes their self-esteem.

  • Develop, complete, and submit weekly lesson plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience as a basketball player and coach.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

  • Flexibility to travel.

  • Must have a strong interest in working with children.

  • Experience overseeing a group of young people is preferred.

  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of program and school staff.

  • Must have excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.

Salary and Benefits

$30.00 per hour
