Position Summary
New York City Mission Society’s Power Academy after-school program is dedicated to cultivating the personal growth and educational advancement of all of our middle school school-aged participants. With a curriculum focused on academic enrichment, community service, cultural enrichment, the arts, recreation, and social emotional learning, Power Academy reinforces school-day learning in a safe and healthy environment. (Program will operate Fully In-Person)
Title: Sports and Fitness Activity Specialist, After-School Program
Program: Harlem Village Academy
Employment Status: Part-time: 6 hours per week (Tuesday and Thursday, 3-6 pm)
Basic Function: Students will learn the benefits of participating in sports. Will emphasize participation in a whole range of enjoyable physical activities (games, sports and exercise), this includes traditional sports and fitness activities.
Principal Responsibilities
Program Planning/Curriculum

Understands the essential objectives of the Mission Society program and can effectively communicate those objectives to all immediate stakeholders (families & youth).

Program components included providing an environment that fosters creativity for the children; ability to accept supervision and direction.

Teach a range of sports including basketball, soccer, football, and volleyball.

Participates in all staff meetings, trainings and activities.

Prepare curriculum, materials, and hand-outs.

Instruct participants on Sport exercises and developing a healthy life style.

Use a variety of methods and approaches (including differentiation) to match curricular objectives and the range of participants needs.

Conduct other duties assigned.
Activity Facilitation

Incorporate group leaders into the activity and work with them to oversee the activity

Ensure equal opportunity for all participants; utilize positive management of behavior in an environment of mutual respect which allows participants to feel safe, secure, and promotes their self-esteem

Develop, complete and submit weekly lesson plans
Qualifications
-
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent, or substantial experience working with children (elementary or middle school aged).

Associate’s Degree or college credits preferred.

Must have strong interest in working with children.

Must have the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of program and school staff.

Must have excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.

Must have excellent behavior and classroom management skills.
-
Knowledge of all sports and ability to teach a range of all learners, (beginners - advanced).

Salary and Benefits
$30.00 per hour
