Pride and Progress

Writer: Lillion HuntLillion Hunt

Visibility is important! Every June, Pride Month offers an opportunity to uplift the LGBTQIA+ community, become better allies, and celebrate the remarkable contributions of queer individuals. Queer figures have been engineers, artists, and mathematicians throughout history, and young people deserve to see themselves reflected in their education. We hope this list of fierce professionals can improve LGBTQ+ visibility in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), inspiring others on their own journeys in these fields. For the queer youth in our classrooms, these powerful stories serve as a reminder that they are enough, they deserve to take up space, and they can make a difference in the world when they show up fully as themselves.

We hope you will join us in celebrating the queer icons in STEAM today who are proudly driving change forward.

These leaders are making space for individuals to be their truest selves across STEAM, ensuring no voices are left out. At the Mission Society, we’re dedicated to representing and protecting all young people that come into our classrooms and reinforcing that all LGBTQIA+ individuals belong year-round.

As a way to build a supportive environment where queer youth can safely meet and learn from one another, our staff helped start a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at our high school. We also have a gender-inclusive bathroom, providing our high school students with spaces that align with their needs. Through visibility, advocacy, and community building, we are creating a brighter future where every individual can stand proud of who they are and what they can bring to the world.
